  • My husband is a diver. I've never had an interest in diving. I get seasick and I'm afraid of fish that are bigger than me. I'm not really a strong swimmer and while my happy place is to be right next to the ocean to hear the sounds, smell the air and feel the breeze, being in it more than waist deep wasn't my thing. So why did I decide to get certified? I seem like the least likey person who would want to dive. We became friends with another couple two years ago and they've become members of our family. We travel together and they are also certified divers. The more we discussed vacation planning, the more I realized that I'd be spending quite a bit of our trips together missing out on memories and shared experiences. With trepidation, I decided to try it. My first day of training was difficult. I expected the confined water skills to occur in a swimming pool. Instead they occurred in a protected bay on Sint Maarten. I swallowed cup fulls of sea water, panicked more than once, puked after the first session was over and bailed before the second session was barely started. I took some Dramamine slept off the bad experience and came back determined the next day. I surprised myself and my instructor when I completed confined water 2-5 and my first open water dive. I fell in love with life under the sea. It's beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. I am so glad that I was brave enough to go back for day two. I'm ready to plan my next trip and to share these moments with my husband.
