Dive Buddies: Adam Pierce, Angela Steinway, Eli Chavez Night dive at the Marine Room with some of my MVP dive buddies! I was hoping we'd find some of those big octopus we saw last weekend out hunting, but night dives are always great no matter what you see. Surface swim out was easy, not many signs of life on the way. We dropped at around 30 feet near the slope down into the canyon and headed north. Saw quite a few horn sharks (as many as 4 at once), lots of egg-laden rock crabs, lobsters (one of which was eating an octopus), a couple decorator crabs, and the usual nighttime plethora of swimming crabs. Not many octopus, though! Even the small reds that are normally out in numbers at night near shores. I spotted a wall similar to the one we saw last weekend filled with octopus, albeit a bit shallower by Adam's estimate, so we went and investigated and sure enough it was still loaded with big octopus in almost every hole. Not sure when they come out for food or if they just snag whatever wanders past, but they look big! I decided to snorkel by the reef a bit after we surfaced (which I did solo) and I found a couple large guitar fish and the pack of leopard sharks (they're getting big!). Overall a great dive!

Dive Buddy: Emily Strand Weekday morning dive ritual with Emily! Shallows were super clear, but didn't see much on the swim out besides one lone horn shark. There was a slight southerly current that moved our descent point a bit south of our usual grass patch. We dropped just south of Vallecitos Point a bit past the canyon. Saw TONS of octopus (both red and a couple two spot) and side gilled sea goddesses (which I thought were mimic dorids), a medium sized halibut, and some foraging rock crabs. Also saw a pretty massive male sheepshead, possibly the same one I saw way back in OW. I hit reserve pressure a bit early on the swim in (Emily was snapping lots of pictures of nudibranchs after we turned and I didn't want to rush her), so we had to ascend a bit early to do a swimming safety stop. But when we surfaced there were hundreds of cormorants flying north right over us! It was pretty magical. When we got back to our cars Emily said her knees were wet under her dry suit which was weird...

Dive Buddy: Hailey Chasin Hailey borrowed the wrong tank (DIN) from Rick and we didn't have an insert, so she had to drive all the way back to his house and get one (I ordered one for my save-a-dive kit in case it happens again). Saw a leopard shark in the shallows on the way out (and possibly the same one on the way back in). Saw lots of round rays, one thornback ray, rock crabs, octopus, sculpin, a decorator crab, hermit crab, and a strange ball-shaped crab that we'd never seen before. At 71 mins, this was my longest dive yet!

Dive Buddy: Emily Strand Another night dive with an Ocean Enterprises bud! Emily showed me some nudibranchs, the coolest of which was a tiny opalescent one. Also saw quite a few spanish shawls and octopus as usual. Finally found some little juvenile horn sharks - they look like squeaky toys! Saw a couple sheep crabs. Emily also nearly had a shark run into her, which gave her a pretty big fright even though she thinks it might've been just a leopard shark. Saw a few thornback rays and a bigger horn shark on the swim in.
