Dive Buddies: Emily Strand, Sam Smith After some hot soup and a short ride over to the Ruby E (and an hour surface interval), we were back in the water and on our way down to the next wreck! This one was also missing a mooring, so we followed the line as the worker was setting a new one on the bow of the wreck. We followed Frankie's, the crew member that gave the briefing, advice and first swam counterclockwise around the base of the ship before ascending a bit to explore the deck. We saw lots more Spanish shawls here and I found quite a few kelp greenlings chilling in the strawberry anemones, but overall I think the Yukon had more life. I found myself a lot colder on this dive and was also having so much fun taking videos of Emily and Sam that I neglected to check in on my air until it was at 700! I stayed calm, but signaled my dive buddies that I needed to turn. We meandered back up the mooring and started our safety stop, but less than a minute in I started feeling resistance breathing on my reg. I knew I was getting really low on air, so I signaled out of air to Emily knowing she most likely still had lots left, and she quickly handed me her octo. It took me a bit to get situated and by the time I looked down at my dive computer again, we had dropped to 34 ft! We did a slow ascent back to the safety stop while Sam stuck with us, probably confused and worried about what was going on. We only finished half our safety stop time before surfacing. I felt pretty stupid and bummed about ending an otherwise great day of diving by scaring my friends, but Emily assured me that I did exactly what I was supposed to in that situation and Sam said what's most important is that we all got back safe. I feel lucky to have such awesome dive friends!
